Released on January 13, 2018, the 8TB ST8000DM004 joined Seagate’s BarraCuda 3.5-inch desktop HDD family. It is still listed on Seagate’s current BarraCuda pages and datasheets (so not discontinued).

Positioned in the budget tier, it exists to deliver low-cost, high-capacity SATA storage. The 3.5-inch drive uses a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, 5400 RPM motor, 256 MB cache, and SMR recording, with a rated 190 MB/s maximum sustained OD read and a 55 TB/year workload limit—well suited to sequential bulk storage rather than frequent heavy writes. Ideal roles include mass media archives and large game libraries, or as a budget capacity upgrade. Unique note: SMR (shingled) recording, which prioritizes density over sustained write performance.
