Seagate introduced the 2TB BarraCuda (ST2000DM008) on October 5, 2018 as part of its BarraCuda 3.5-inch desktop HDD family; the later ST2000DMZ08 is a “Z‑SKU” variant with the same core specs. It continues to appear on Seagate’s current BarraCuda 3.5 lineup and datasheets, so it is not discontinued.

Positioned in the budget tier, it exists to provide inexpensive terabytes rather than SSD-class speed. As a 3.5-inch SATA 6 Gb/s, 7200 RPM HDD with a 256 MB cache that uses SMR recording, it’s a sensible choice for a PC game library, general files, or a low-cost capacity upgrade. Unique note: SMR favors sequential workloads and is less ideal for sustained random-write tasks.
