Samsung’s 980 SSD (1TB) launched on March 9, 2021 as the entry NVMe model in the 980 family—and Samsung’s first consumer DRAM‑less NVMe drive. It uses PCIe 3.0 x4 with NVMe 1.4 and V‑NAND TLC in an M.2 2280 form factor.

Positioned in the budget tier, it exists to bring Gen3 NVMe speeds at a lower price than 980 PRO/990‑series parts. With a 600 TBW endurance rating for the 1TB model and an HMB design instead of onboard DRAM, it’s well‑suited as a Windows boot drive, a mainstream game library, or a budget upgrade. Not ideal for PS5 expansion or heavy sustained‑write workloads. Unique: it debuted Samsung’s DRAM‑less NVMe approach.
